The U.S. National Whitewater Center, the training facility for the 2012 U.S. Team, is the world’s largest artificial whitewater river designed with a recirculating water supply. In 2006, the state of North Carolina mandated it to provide some barrier against pathogens in the water that might come into contact with team members. The USNWC evaluated products, including chemical disinfectants. As a result, they selected the Aquionics (Nuvonic) system based on its tiny footprint, easy installation, and low maintenance costs.
The USNWC purchased an InLine 18000+ U.V. disinfection system. Water passes through the Inline 18000+ and is exposed to UV light from 18 medium-pressure amalgam lamps, which protects against microorganisms on a cellular level. The system has 20″ inlet/ outlet flanges. It also has a quartz sleeve cleaning system and a UV intensity sensor to ensure proper U.V. dosage.
In the quest to protect athletes, the U.S. National Whitewater Center’s decision to embrace UV systems in 2012 was key. By harnessing the power of UV-C light, the USNWC ensured the safety of the 2012 U.S. Slalom Canoe and Kayak Team and set a precedent for water quality management in the sports industry. This innovative solution not only protects athletes but also inspires others to prioritize safety and technology in their own endeavors.
“Aquionics’ (Nuvonic) InLine system helps us maintain a safe training environment without maintenance,” said Jeff Wise, Executive Director of the USNWC.
